Infertility is a very unique condition, where it involves a couple rather than a single individual. How it is defined? Infertility is defined as couple failure to conceive after 12 months of uninterrupted regular sexual intercourse in a woman less than 35 years of age. If women are more than 35 years of age, 6 months of uninterrupted regular sexual intercourse not resulting in pregnancy is defined as infertility. Usually 5% of the couple conceiving every month and around 85-90% of the couple will conceive at the end of 1 to 1½ year after regular sexual intercourse.
When should infertile couple should get investigated? 1 in 6 couple will have a problem in getting pregnant. Most doctor advice to get investigated for a couple, if they are not able to conceive after 1 year of uninterrupted sexual intercourse. Earlier, if the women are more than 35 years of age or if women have irregular periods, they get investigated earlier.
What are the causes of infertility? Male contributes to 20% of the infertility, female contributes to another 40% of infertility, together like male and female and unexplained together constitute another 40% of the infertility. So, what are the basic tests or evaluation required for infertility? The infertile couple that means both wife and husband together should be evaluated in a fertility center. That is most important. It cannot be done individually, it always has to be done as a together. It is always better to get all the investigations done prior to start of any fertility treatment. What are the basic tests of infertility? Basic test of infertility involves 2 people – husband and wife. For husband, it is all is required is semen analysis but the semen analysis has to be done in it is accredited laboratory not accurated and three days of abstinence is required. Basic infertility test in women are three types: hormonal blood test, ultrasound scan and hysterosalpingogram. However, hormonal blood test and ultrasound scan are have to be done in a specific period of their women’s menstrual cycle. Basically it is on 2nd day or 3rd day of her cycle. HSG, which is an x-ray of fallopian tube usually done between day 5 and day 10. Once the result of basic blood tests have been reviewed by the fertility consultants, the couple are advised one of the following: if all the tests are normal, they are advised either to have simple treatments like ovulation induction with timely intercourse or ovulation induction with intra-uterine insemination. If the tests are abnormal, they could further be advised to have further advanced test or they may be advised to have high end fertility treatment like IVF or ICSI.
