Anemia
Anemia is a condition where there is less than normal hemoglobin in the blood.

Incidence
It is one of the commonest health problems faced by women in India. It affects more than 50 % of the women population i.e almost 1 out of every 2 women are affected by anemia.

Symptoms
Women usually present with some common symptoms like tiredness, fatigue, paleness and breathlessness (all caused due to the reduced amount that is circulated in the blood stream).
Anemia is usually caused due to lack of iron (also known as iron deficiency anemia). Iron deficiency anemia is commonest cause of anemia in India. Iron deficiency could be due to various causes such as:
a) Improper diet which contains less of iron
b) States like pregnancy or childhood growth spurts where the requirement for iron is not met due to the lack of iron rich foods
c) Heavy menstrual bleeding where the amount of iron lost in the blood is not replaced adequately

Complications
Anemia can range from mild to severe. It can cause a lot of problems in the future. If left untreated, it can make a person more prone to infections and illnesses. Severe anemia can cause complications with the lungs or heart. During pregnancy both the mother and child can have complications before or after delivery due to anemia.

Diagnosis
Anemia is usually diagnosed by clinical examination and simple blood test.

Treatment
The treatment depends on the severity of the condition. If anemia is mild and the cause is nutritional, a balanced diet that is rich in iron, is recommended. Inclusion of green leafy vegetables, dried fruits, beans, pulses and legumes into your diet is recommended. Iron tablets and a multivitamin course is also used to treat anemia.
